INTRODUCTION
Learning First Aid is a civic responsibility of each citizen. First Aid have been practiced since the inception of human race to help one another in sickness or after injury, but an organised world wide effort at giving First Aid came only in the year 1877 with the formation of St. John Ambulance Association of England.
The art and science of medicine is constantly developing and changing at an ever-increasing rate. Hence, a First Aider needs to keep abreast of modern medical thoughts.
DEFINITION
First Aid is the immediate help or treatment given to a victim of an accident, sudden illness or other injury before medical help is obtained, using available materials near by.
AIMS OF FIRST AID

To Preserve life.
- To Promote recovery.
- To Prevent further damages.
SCOPE OF FIRST AID
- Correct Diagnosing.
- Proper Treatment.
- Immediate Disposal.
QUALTIES OFA FIRST AIDER:
A good First Aider must be calm, methodical and quick. And must always work
with the above aims and within the scope for all illness or injuries from minor
to major.
Haphazard handling of victim
will only make the final recovery difficult.
Best advice to a good First Aider is "Make Haste Slow "
Action in an
emergency
FIRITLY assess the situation - Are there any risks to you or the casualty?
SECONDLY assess the casualty - Is the casualty visibly conscious? Or is
collapsed. Does the victim respond to shaking of the shoulders?
THIRDLY assess
the condition - Is the condition due to injury or
illness?
A victim’s life can be saved if the
following are diagnosed and taken
care :
- (a) Air way clearance.
- (b) Breathing.
- (c) Circulation.
- (d) Bleeding - Internal / External.
Diagnosing an unconscious victim is more difficult and important than a conscious victim, since the conscious victim will speak out the problems on his own.
While diagnosing an unconscious
victim utmost importance and care must be given to the above factors (A B C of
life)
(a) Do not give anything orally as this may enter the air passage.
(b) Do not make the victim sleep upwards, as the tongue may roll back causing respiratory problem.
(c) Check for alertness by AVPU code.

- A - Alert.
- V - Responds to voice.
- P - Responds to pain.
- U-Unresponsive.
- Eyes - Do they remain closed?
- Speech - Does he responds to your questions.
- Movements - Does he obey commands?
(d) Conduct a top to toe survey looking for Airway clearance, Breathing, Circulation, Bleeding, Depression, Irregularity, Deformity, Bruising, Tenderness, Rigidity, Swelling, Discolouration, Loss of sensation and bleeding from Orifices.
(e) If every thing is normal put the victim in recovery put the victim in recovery position. If not, administer necessary First Aid and then put the victim in recovery position.
